U for Unicorn – #atozchallenge
Unicorns.
The fabled horse-like creatures with a single horn protruding from their heads. They represent purity, virginity, etc.
Who knows where these things originated? Was it the rhinocerous?
The narwhal?
The drunken delusions of an insane bard, centuries and centuries ago?
They’ve been the target of all types of speculation in fantasy stories. Terry Brooks has a unicorn play a major part in The Black Unicorn. Mercedes Lackey has them in her book, Fortune’s Fool. There’s The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle – which I have not read, but heard much about.
I’m sure people without TV and all of the entertainment diversions available to us had plenty of opportunity to stretch their imaginations. Though I still think it’s possible something like a unicorn could have existed at some point in past history.

An A to Z Co-host blog
Loved your post – one does have to wonder! My favorite Unicorn is the one that graces the tapestries in the Cloisters Museum in NYC: http://www.metmuseum.org/Collections/search-the-collections/70007568 I find the 7 tapestries and their story (from 1400-1600 AD) fascinating. Enjoy the rest of your A-Z challenge!
Actually, Lackey has unicorns in several of her stores of the 500 kingdoms.
I haven’t read all the 500 Kingdoms books yet, I think I’m a couple behind, and it’s been several years since I read the others. I was just going off of memory and what I remembered being the most prominent in a specific book 🙂
Well, I have to admit, “The Last Unicorn” is the one story i love and is my number one favorite movie. There are so many stories about unicorns. They’ve even found their way into my own stories and role plays.
